Two goals in the first half were enough to give Xewkija Tigers the three points to keep their pressure on leaders Nadur Youngsters, who still maintain their two point advantage on the same Tigers. It was a deserved win for Xewkija who produced the best scoring opportunities and controlled the match with some dominant possession. However, Sannat still managed to create some difficulties to the Tigers and should have been much better in front of goal. Xewkija had missing suspended Elton Vella, whilst new recruit Adrian Parnis, who had made his debut against Mosta FC, leaves the goal to Joseph Grima.
Play was rather balanced during the opening minutes and the two sides went close to score an early goal. In the first minute of play a shot on the run by Eric Nwankwo ended just high and in an immediate reply by Xewkija a header by John Camilleri missed the target. In the 9th minute Sannat were again dangerous through a shot by Eric Nwankwo following an inviting pass by Diego Maradona Petriaggi that ended high. Sannat’s goalkeeper Angelo Brignoli was called to make a difficult save on 18 minutes to turn in corner a strike by Manwel Xerri and from the resultant corner action the same goalkeeper managed to block on the line a header by John Camilleri. Xewkija opened the score on 21 minutes through a fine header by Mark Camillerifollowing a cross by Joseph Azzopardi. Four minutes later Xewkija’s Chris Camilleri had a good shot from outside the area that ended wide and one minute later Sannat lost a golden opportunity to level the score. Xewkija’s rearguard failed to clear a long through ball and Eric Nwankwo came face to face with the goalkeeper but the striker saw his shot on the run ending high. Sannat were punished for the missed chance as Xewkija doubled the score on 28 minutes through a close ranged shot by Rodney Buttigieg following a free kick by Chris Camilleri. On 41 minutes Xewkija went again close to scoring through a shot by Chris Camilleri that ended wide and the same Camilleri failed to hit the target on the stroke of half time after receiving from Mark Camilleri.
In the third minute of play of the second period Xewkija’s Manwel Xerri had an angled shoit that ended inches wide and one minute later Sannat replied with a long ranged attempt by Dylan Mercieca that ended over the crossbar. Sannat went closest to re-open the issue on 59 minutes when a header by Noel Borg from a corner kick by Diego Maradona Petriaggi was cleared off the line by Josmar Vella with the goalkeeper beaten. One minute later another long ranged attempt by Chris Camilleri ended high and for the rest of the match the Tigers administered play and also created some other good scoring opportunities near the end of the match. On 78 minutes Chris Camilleri’s shot ended just wide and four minutes later John Camilleri concluded high from a good position a cross by Chris Camilleri. In the first minute of stoppage time John Camilleri’s header from a corner kick by Chris Camilleri ended inches over the crossbar so that the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
