Xewkija Tigers move three points clear at the top of the table after a fine win over Xaghra United and following Nadur's slump to SKVW. It was a deserved victory for Xewkija in a match which they dicated from the opening whistle with the right approach and fast counter breaks.
Xewkija opened the score in their first real threat on goal when a free kick by Chris Camilleri was badly cleared by the Xaghra defence, with the ball ending onto Rodney Buttigieg's feet who unleashed a screamer which beat Vella. The Blues had an immediate reaction but the Tigers were well organized and controlled their opponents with certain ease. Xaghra were dangerous only through Thiago Dos Santos' solo efforts where twice he failed to concluded on goal, with his first shot ending wide, whereas his second shot ended high.
Xaghra went close again in the third minute of the second half but once again Dos Santos' effort ended wide. Xewkija made Xaghra pay their erratic finishing on 53 minutes when John Camilleri released Chris Camilleri on the edge of the box with the latter dribbling past the keeper and putting the ball in an empty net. Xaghra replied 5 minutes later through Michael Bezzina but saw his effort blocked by goalie Xuereb. Xaghra were dangerous again on 65 minutes with a header from Sam Frank Bajada which ended wide and minutes later Dos Santos saw his effort on goal deflected by defence into a corner. Xewkija Tigers sealed the three points on 85 minutes when Elton Vella released Mark Camilleri who beat goalie Vella who was out of hin line to clear the danger.
