Xewkija Tigers register a handsome win in the first round of the U*BET FA Trophy over Swieqi United. This was a historic match for the Tigers as for the first time in their history they faced Maltese opposition in a competitive match. For this match the Tigers had Elton Vella missing who was kept on the bench throughout the whole match.
With this win the Tigers have become the first Gozitan team ever to earn qualification to the second round in the second most important honour in Maltese football. The Tigers had a very positive performance in which John Camilleri was the absolute hero scoring 4 goals. Swieqi tried to resist Xewkija's efforts but all was in vain as they conceeded the first goal.
Swieqi's goalie Edwards was called to make a very difficult save after just 5 minutes of play following a shot by Christian Bugeja who was in turn served by a low cross from the left by John Camilleri. Two minutes later the same Camilleri dribbled past Edwards but had his effort cleared off the line. On 20 minutes Camilleri had another effort cleared off the line, this time following a header and four minutes later another defensive effort denied Camilleri from opening the score when once again his shot was cleared off the line with goalie Edwards beaten once again. On 28 minutes Chris Camilleri had a shot ending high and two minutes later a header by John Camilleri failed to trouble the goalkeeper. Xewkija's efforts were finally rewarded on 36 minutes when John Camilleri connected excellently with the ball to place it in the corner of the net following an inviting through pass by Chris Camilleri. Seconds from half time Chris Camilleri could have added a second but his effort ended just wide.
In the second minute of the first half Swieqi had their best opportunity of the match but Simon Sammut's effort ended wide without giving goalie Grima any trouble. On 50 minutes John Camilleri's header passed in front of goal with the goalie beaten and two minutes he scored his second goal of the game when he tapped in a low cross from the right from Joseph Azzopardi. One minute later Xewkija added a third when goalie Edwards partially saved a free kick from Chris Camilleri, and from the rebound John Camilleri placed in an empty net. On 74 minutes goalie Edwards made an excellent save when he denied Buttigieg from scoring but on 82 minutes he could do nothing when John Camilleri headed on the first post a corner by Chris Camilleri. Xewkija sealed the issue two minutes from time with their fifth goal by Chris Camilleri who placed in the corner of the net an asssist by John Camilleri.
